Panthers Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

This year's training camp isn't so much about finding starters as it is finding depth. The Panthers return 21 of 22 starters from last year's team and with Richard Marshall taking over for Ken Lucas at cornerback, basically all of the starting spots are Read more...

Panthers Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

The Carolina Panthers parted ways with veteran cornerback Ken Lucas in the offseason for two reasons—first, his burgeoning salary cap figure, and second, they had confidence in the guy playing behind him. That guy is fourth-year man Richard Marshall. With Lucas gone, Marshall is slated to step up from nickel back and start this season alongside the team's top corner Chris Gamble. A former second-round pick out of Fresno State in 2006, Marshall spent three seasons behind Lucas and Gamble and has shown enough to warrant a shot at the starting lineup despite struggling down the stretch last season. But can he handle the job? Marshall finished last season with 61 tackles, four pass breakups and one interception. Read more...

Carolina agreed to trade Lucas to the Detroit Lions

The eve of free agency came to an anticlimactic end on Thursday night with starting cornerback Ken Lucas still a member of the Carolina Panthers. At least as of now. The good news came when Carolina agreed to trade Lucas to the Detroit Lions at noon, a move that basically would have assured Lucas over $11 [...] Read more...

Panthers Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

With $16.7 million tied up in their franchise tag offer to defensive end Julius Peppers, the salary-cap strapped Carolina Panthers have been particularly quiet in the free agent market. Not only have the Panthers not signed any players, but there also have been no reports of them even visiting with any since March 1. That's not to say the Panthers haven't (they're one of the most secretive organizations in the league and the leaks are few and far between), but not much was expected of the Panthers anyway. Technically they have all 22 starters returning from last season, but the future of Peppers and cornerback Ken Lucas remain up in the air. The Panthers unsuccessfully attempted to trade Lucas to the Detroit Lions (he nixed the deal) and are likely to do the... Read more...

Panthers prepare game plan for high-scoring Cards (AP)

When Ken Lucas was called for a pivotal pass interference penalty late in Carolina's loss to the New York Giants in Week 16, it marked the first and only such penalty for the Panthers all season. It also didn't take long for this often-repeated snide response from cynical fans and skeptical analysts: How can you be called for interference when you're never close to the receiver? Read more...
